J. Overton    Overton ""Made up"" Atlases 1714
£450
50.5 x 35cm

Henry Overton inherited his father's business in 1707. Stock included a number of plates for county maps, but not a complete set, and Overton had to buy in the missing counties from elsewhere to make up orders for county atlases for clients. In 1711 he employed Sutton Nicholls to engrave plates of the ""missing"" counties and 5 were completed bearing dates of 1711 or 1712, and the imprint of Nicholls as the engraver. The project was abandoned in c 1713 when Overton acquired the complete set of John Speed plates, which could then be used to fill the remaining ""gaps"" in making up atlases. In 1714, however Overton took possession of a newly engraved map of Nottinghamshire. Although without an engraver's signature, Hodson (County Atlases of the British Isles) attributes the map to Nicholls on stylistic grounds, and believes it may have been commissioned from Nicholls with the other 5 but was delayed in production. He suggests this may possibly be due to the carrying out of an original survey for the town plan of the city of Nottingham, which is also shown on the map. This example is in original, contemporary colour. Some stregthening to the verso with archival material, but a most attractive and rarely encountered map.
