These maps by Lt. R. Owen Jones were produced by zincographic transfer to accompany the 1885 Boundary Commissioners Report showing the proposed new divisions of the counties for parliamentary and local government purposes. Once the Act had passed they were re-issued as part of the Parliamentary Accounts and Papers for the session of 23 October 1884-14 August 1885. This example is from this re-issue, so distinguished by a small piece of paper stuck over the word "proposed" (the changes having now passed into law.) Original colour.
This item was probably a special order from the London map retailer Stanfords, whose lable it bears on the original, red slip case in which it is contained. It is there titled as "Ordnance Map of the Country Around Cromer, and comprises 4 sheets from the Ordnance Survey's one inch "New Series" - numbers 131,132,147 and 148. The sheets are dissected and linen backed and cover a coastal triangle encompassing Wells to the north-west, Ormesby St. Margaret to the south-east, and Swanton Morley to the south west. The map is in fine condition, and was once part of the map and local history collection of Ron Fiske.

Central Yorkshire. It took some 70 years for the OS to publish its complete, first series of one inch maps of England and Wales (known as "The Old Series") , the last northern counties being issued in 1874. Even before this landmark was reached, however, the Survey had, in 1863, already authorised work on a new, updated survey based on a single projection, involving changes to many sheetlines, and re-numbering of sheets throughout. The resulting 1" maps are known as the "New Series" and were issued from 1887, before eventually evolving, with further changes, into the "New Revised Series". Our map is sheet 62 of the New Series (previously sheet 93 NW under the Old Series enumeration), and was published (from an electrotype) in 1880. It covers an area roughly encompassing Fountains Abbey (Studland), Easingwold, Rufforth, and Harrogate. It is dissected into 6 linen-backed segments, and is in good condition.
